I just installed pMachine Pro, all the steps in the install worked, and I renamed my PM directory to something else. I also updated the PM_INC files in all the appropriate directories to reference the new directory. So how come when I log into the admin, it looks for the “control panel” graphics and CSS files in the old PM directory (which no longer exists)?

Did you upload your files using something like Dreamweaver or GoLive?  Programs like that will sometimes alter paths inside files as they upload, which can cause all sorts of problems.

Try using a stand-alone FTP client.

(The default installation only uses relative paths from your control panel directory so there’s no way it would still reference an old directory.)
